Seiko Marinemaster 300M (models SBDX001 & SBDX017) are often compared to the Rolex Submariners, being referred to as the "Japanese" Rolex Submariner.Four different Seiko Marinemaster 300 in various colorways vs. one Rolex Submariner, which would you choose? I have owned a MarineMaster 300M (and probably will again) and the 600M Springdrive also. I traded my MM300 for a Seiko Landmaster with the 8L35 movement and still have that one. I currently own the Rolex Sub LV and several others.
Compared to the Seiko divers Rolex has much better fit and finish, uses a higher grade of steel for watch purposes, has arguably a more robust movement and can go just as long without service BUT Seiko movements are cheap just to replace in many cases, people see . Many people wear Submariners and Seamasters, and some claim it’s the ideal type of watch to wear. However, the Japanese Domestic Market likes to argue otherwise. Marinemaster 300 vs submariner. Size-wise the MM does not wear like a 44, more like a 42, but it is thick (in a cool way). My Sub is a 5-digit so not a real comparison if you’re referring to a modern ceramic Sub. My Sub wears slightly smaller, thinner and lighter as you might expect. Both are very comfortable though.
Meanwhile, Seiko replaced the Marinemaster 300 SBDX001 with the SBDX017, giving the model some very slight updates. Later on, that made way for the SLA019J1/SBDX021 (which we compared to Rolex Submariner “Hulk” here). Today, the current model is the Seiko Prospex SLA021J1.
