Suddenly, in 1985, something much closer to the Rolex Explorer II we know today was born: Its size increased from 39mm to 40mm, it was outfitted with the unmistakably Rolex Mercedes hand set and dial, it received a sapphire crystal — and it got a new movement and a white-dial version.A number of Rolex models appeared during the 1980s marking an important period in the brand's history. Here is your ultimate guide to Rolex 1980s watches.
1985: The Transitional Period (Ref. 16550) In 1985, the Rolex 16550 was unveiled, marking a pivotal moment in the history of the Explorer II series. This watch introduced a series of design changes that would define its look for years to come.
The Rolex Explorer II 1655 is powered by the 26-jewel Caliber 1575 movement, and the watch features a number of characteristics aimed specifically at cave exploring. Among these are a date function, a stationary bezel with 24-markings, a 100-meter depth rating, and a large, brightly colored 24-hour hand. Rolex kept the Explorer II reference 1655 in production until around 1984/1985. In 1984, Rolex introduced its successor, the reference 16550. In this production period of roughly 13/14 years, Rolex only amended small changes. The year 1985 saw a number of changes to the Explorer II, with Rolex releasing an entirely new model with the reference number 16550, available with a white dial. The dial design was now more reminiscent of the GMT-Master, with the Explorer II featuring for the first time lume-filled applied dot and bar indices with white gold surrounds.
1985 – The Rolex Explorer II is launched with a more modern appearance. The reference 16550 introduced contemporary features such as a 40mm case, a wider bezel with larger numbers, and luminous dot hour markers, which we still see in today’s Explorer II.
